Targeting of mitochondrial outer membrane proteins
The mitochondrial outer membrane is involved in many important biological functions, including transport of metabolites, peptides and proteins, redox regulation, programmed cell death and regulation of mitochondrial fusion, fission, morphology and inheritance. More than 100 different proteins of the outer membrane are known in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. All of these are encoded in the nucleus and have to be imported into the lipid phase after their synthesis in the cytosol. Moreover, many proteins have to assemble then into larger complexes within the membrane which can be homo- or heterooligomeric. In this project we want to study how proteins are sorted and assembled into the mitochondrial outer membrane.
