Structural Studies of Integral Membrane Proteins

Protein crystallography ranges among the most powerful tools to obtain information on biological macromolecules. Three-dimensional structures are a keystone for understanding function and often a prerequisite for the design of further studies using a variety of techniques. We are isolating various integral membrane proteins, either from their original hosts or after recombinant overproduction in suitable host organisms. The proteins are then solubilized and purified and subjected to extensive crystallization trials using state-of-the-art automatization and diffraction equipment. With purified protein at hand, this line of work offers multiple possibilities for functional studies in artificial membrane systems as well as for close interaction with other groups within the international research training group.
